Union Depot in 1915 with
new class 2 centre-entrance cars built by
American-McGuire-St.Louis
car cos. for the California-Panama Exposition that was held in Balboa Park
to commemorate the building of the Panama Canal. A similar exposition was
held in San Francisco at the same time and Santa Fe. RR offered round trip
tickets at bargain prices so one could see both of them. The class 2 cars
were capable of running in MU and there was 74 of them. There was a steady
stream of cars running to Balboa Park and back to the Union Depot to handle
the crowds. This exposition ran the entire year from midnight January 1st
to December 31st 1915. The Union Depot was brand new also, having replaced
an 1880s wood structure. It is still there today.
